If you want to work as a professional skipper, you need a commercial endorsement and in addition to your license and for EU countries an ICC certificate. This is mutually recognised within the EU (it is not an obligation for the owner of, for example, a Greek boat to employ only Greek skippers with Greek licences; many yachts and commercial boats are skippered by skippers of nationalities other than the country of boat registration).

If you have a UK licence and decide to apply for a commercial endorsement in the UK, you will need the following:

  • a certificate of completion of a course (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, Powerboat 2) or an examination (Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore, Yachtmaster Ocean, Advanced Powerboat)*
  • certificate of completion of the RYA First Aid course or equivalent - see description of requirements for Yachtmasters
RYA VHF licence or foreign equivalent
  • certificate of completion of the RYA Sea Survival or STCW Personal Survival Techniques course
  • certificate of completion of the RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course
  • proof of medical fitness in English, preferably a British form, but a certificate from an EU sports doctor is also accepted
  • photo ID
  • Commercial endorsement application form (see the Downloads section in the footer)

* YM Offshore or YM Ocean licence holders can already apply for the STCW 78 commercial endorsement, which entitles them to work on commercial ships outside UK waters
